NAAO+ Archive

After completing a small site using Squarespace, the founder of NAAO, Charlotte Murphy, wanted to expand the site to encompass the NAAO archive and begin to digitize and build out this important historical resource. This is a deep dive into the preservation of an archive requiring some creativity in highlighting the surviving information in living and breathing ways.

Practically, this required a full code customization and UX forward filter/search for sorting a large archive of dated documents. We also worked on an updated logo and graphical system.

The National Association of Artists' Organizations (NAAO), a Washington, DC non-profit arts service organization, was established in 1982 and lasted about 20 years. NAAO’s first members were the founders and direct descendants of alternative art spaces that formed in the '60s and '70s in direct opposition to the stultifying conservatism of mainstream art institutions. NAAO members were dedicated to creating artist generated systems of support for new work—often commercially unfeasible—that included performance, book, political, sound, mail and installation art, as well as new music and experimental literature. Concretizing the New Left's radical shift to individual freedom that ignited activism in artists, people of color, disabled people, women, and LGBTQ+ communities, artists’ organizations were determined to take action and create change in the art world and beyond.

Set Creative

Set Creative is an experiential creative agency. I have been working on projects for them for about 7 years: editing content, designing and developing their original website and then directing a redesign in 2022. When we reconnected I developed a scalable design system in Webflow and collaborated with the client using Miro and Figma to identify and write/design them a voice that felt more human and unique to their company's mission. I also developed a custom filter system that made their site searchable by brand, activation and client.

This is an example of No Wave Site's "No Revisions" Commission websites. These are sites based on client input, but, except for content and clarity edits, made completely at the discretion of No Wave Site.

No Wave site is a project studio run by Emily Steinfeld. For over a decade we have been trying to communicate the biggest messages in the most direct way possible. We create websites and non-sites, spaces and commissions that ask what is the best way to communicate the breadth of an organization or an individual? How can we prioritize the workers involved? What mode suits the situation? The most simple course of action might be one that denies the typical route, and we’re here to figure out that path.

Man Visible and Invisible, C.W. Leadbeater
I’ve been interested in writing about clairvoyance and invisible thought forms. His books are also full of some of the most interesting drawings and diagrams for visual inspiration.

NYC Restaurant Ads 1981-1998, Public Image Library
Small press book of exactly as the title describes. Great font resource.

Gego: Autobiography of a Line
In my art practice I work in metal and wire and biomaterials but often the metal portion gets overshadowed by the science in my practice, so I am working on aligning the scales.
